Candle Holders
Introduction: Gonder produced a wide variety of Candle Holders. Most were produced as
companions to Console Bowls. However, items were likely retailed as separates,
so finding candle holders without a bowl is common. Finding a complete set -
bowl and candle holders - warrants a small premium in price.
Candle Holders were not produced as mirror images, so you do not need to worry about having right or left facing candle holders. However, it is accepted that they were made to be sold in pairs.
Lines of Wares: Candle Holders span several lines of wares - Standard, Imperial, Original and La Gonda.
Marks: Many candle holders will not be marked on the bottom due to limited space. These would have been marked with paper labels. I've attempted to note those for you on the detailed item page. Many candle holders were assigned a number that corresponds to the Console Bowl they were to accompany (220-C for example). Others are given unique mold numbers.
Availability: Most candle holders are easily located - although sometimes not in pairs. Those that are unmarked are often not noted as Gonder by dealers. Several sets are considered elusive including the #501 Starfish and #866 Sea Shell Candle Holders.
Glaze Treatments: Candle Holders were produced in many of the glazes used at Gonder. You will find most candle holders in glazes commonly used for that line of ware.
