White Foam Drip Glazes

Introduction:  Per a former factory employee, this was referred to as the "icing glaze" noting its resemblance to a tantalizing, drippy cake or dessert icing.  Pieces were first coated with the base color glaze, then inverted and dipped into the foam glaze.  Pieces were turned right side up allowing the foam to run down the sides during firing.  The glaze is often rough to the touch and will often show glaze pops.

Many other potteries were using similar glazes.  However, none produced the white foam with the same wonderful thick texture of Gonder.  Remember to look for a Gonder mark to ensure you are buying authentic Gonder pieces.  A pottery from California has a very convincing white foam drip over Victorian Wine - however, the white will show traces of green.  These California made pieces are either unmarked or marked California.

This glaze treatment is most easily found on the Original line items - in particular the kitchen ware items (mugs, pitchers, tea sets)  in the #900 series and the #700 series planters.  Oddly, I have not seen examples of kitchen ware items in Royal Blue with White Foam Drip.   Have you?  I would love to see photos of #909 or #917 in Royal Blue with White Foam Drip!

This glaze treatment is also used frequently on the very popular #593 Nude and Fawn Planter.  I have seen stunning examples using Forest Green, Chartreuse or Victorian Wine all with White Foam Drip.

This glaze treatment is also found on the #924 Cookie Jar with Puppy Dog Lid from the Original Line.  This piece uses the base of the P-24 cookie jar with a newly designed Puppy Dog Lid.  This Cookie Jar has been easily found in Chartreuse, Forest Green and Victorian Wine - all with White Foam Drip.  I have seen one example (which I quickly purchased) in Dove Grey.  And while it is likely the Cookie Jar would have been produced in all the available colors, I have yet to see it in Royal Blue or Black with White Foam Drip.  Should you encounter this cookie jar in those colors, consider it rare!
